My wife loves to crochet, and she does it very well. She can whip up a granny square like no one’s business. But disappointed by the limitations of the single-needle craft and the tendency for crocheters to focus on quaint styles, namely things involving granny squares, she scoured the web for colonies of crafters who like her long to bring crocheting into modern times. It is while on this search that she discovered amigurumi, the Japanese art (because all crafts from Japan are art) of crocheting or knitting stuffed animals or anthropomorphic creatures that are, quite simply, adorable.

A few nights ago I went upstairs to charge my phone. I sat down on the bed next to my night stand, plugged in the phone, and the next thing I see is Eva leaning over me on the verge of a laughing fit because I had inadvertently fallen asleep. “So that’s where you went,” she said with a smirk.

Pipes for the purpose of transporting water and waste have been a staple of human civilization for close to 5000 years. And yet in all that history, all those years of scientific and technological advancement, when it comes to fixing a clogged pipe the near unanimously agreed upon best tool is a wooden stick with a rubber bowl attached to it.

As anyone who writes with the intent of having their work read by others, looking at a blank page can be a daunting experience. For some, like myself, getting started can be the hardest thing. Like pushing an object from rest, once it gets going momentum helps out a lot, but those first few inches can be killer.

You can’t teach someone without an environment conducive to information reception. In the pedagogy of public education there are innumerable theories and ideas for what constitutes the best practices for managing a classroom in order to create that conducive environment. I just completed my third week of this school year in my fourth year as a teacher, and I am once again reminded just how hard this job, that of maintaining a controlled, calm, and safe environment while also having a constant flow of information, can be.

It’s amazing that nature can spawn a storm that seemingly has a personal grudge against Florida. Fay seems determined to drench every square inch of Florida in it’s rains. Or maybe, our sunny peninsula put in a personal request to big momma Nature to help ease the drought we have been in here in the south for the past couple of years and this is Mom’s way of saying, “yeah, I got the message.”
…getting a (bad) haircut

The most important thing when going to get a haircut is consistency. I have been going to a Supercuts close to my house for the past couple of years. There’s a lady there who usually cuts my hair, and when she is busy I try to wait for her (when time permits). Sometimes I have one of the other people there cut my hair, usually when I am being impatient or when my regular lady isn’t there, and they usually do a good enough job. But the regular girl is consistent. She has left some uneven lines, cut it a little too short or left it a little too long, but she has never botched my head. Two days ago I went to my Supercuts and asked for a haircut.

My wife and I have been re-watching our DVD collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As we make our way through season five of seven I am realizing a couple of things: one, the show is really good and two, I don’t remember most of the episodes from the first time I watched them a couple of years ago.
…getting back to the grind

The worst part of any vacation (even vacations that are particularly stressful) is settling back into the home routine. The getting up, eating, working, eating, exercising, showering, eating, watching tv, going to bed routine. But it really is interesting because when I am away from home for long enough, it’s the routine of home that I miss.
