…anticipation

It’s that feeling you get on x-mas eve. It gives you the giggles when you think about it for too long. It gives you the butterflies as it teases you from the not too distant future. And then you wake up one day after not thinking about it for a while, and the day is there, leaving you befuddled with its sudden arrival. As my wife says, “SURPRISE!” More

…job security

It’s hard to believe that I have nearly come to the end of my third year of teaching. Actually, it’s still hard to believe that I got the job at all. But still, here I am coming to the end of what I will call a successful year. I have to call it a successful year, no matter all the lows that I encountered. Because I got offered a continuing contract, sort of like being tenured. And if I didn’t call it a successful year then it would be like saying to my principal, “hey, do you really think I deserve this, because, I’m not so sure I do.”

The Happening is a film by writer/director M. Night Shyamalan, one that I have been interested in since I first saw the trailer. Basically, it showed some apocalypse-esque (a common theme in movies these days) scenes of people offing themselves in pretty bizarre and random ways. It’s an interesting premise, a movie based on people killing themselves for unexplained reasons in epidemic fashion; my interest was piqued. But yesterday I read a review that dulled my curiosity somewhat.

This is a film that my wife and I had been waiting a while for. I had read about it somewhere online, aintitcool probably, and heard some positive reviews while it was on the festival circuit. It made it to some art house theaters, but never made it here to Tallahassee. And when I happened to see an add for the DVD release on TV, I pre-ordered it as a surprise.

…The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born

Say what you want about Stephen King, but its hard to deny his prolificness. And while the quality of his writing, the quality of any writing, is debatable, you can’t deny the status of the Dark Tower series as epic, grand, and some of King’s finest work.

…judging a book by it’s cover, literally

I had to proctor an exam yesterday, and in preparation for 4+ hours of down time I went and bought a couple of books. One of them, Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s childhood Pal by Christopher Moore, was one I had heard about from a good friend a few years back. At the time I looked it up, read the summaries and reviews, knew the general premise and background of the book, and decided I wanted to get it. It’s a good thing I waited a few years, because look at the special gift edition of the book:

…zombies

I love monsters. As a literary person I understand that monsters are used in stories as tools to examine the failings of society and human nature. Monsters such as vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein, and most others serves as metaphors for the evil potential that all people possess. But only zombies exist as true reflections of the weakness and depravity that we as humans express on a daily basis.

You read that correctly, it’s spelled/pronounced espresso, not expresso. If there was a list of the greatest food creations ever created for consumption, this simple beverage would be at (or near) the top of the list.
